Whilst Suffragettes of Kent is not a suitable book for younger Key Stage 2 pupils to read (as it contains details about forcible feeding), it is a suitable resource for teaching staff. Jennifer is also available to deliver age appropriate author talks to bring historical voices to life and enthuse pupils about the suffrage movement.

The extension of the franchise is a subject taught and studied in history. Suffragettes of Kent is a resource worthy of consideration for supporting teaching of this topic. It provides pupils with an insight into the stories and journeys of those involved in suffrage campaigning whilst facilitating the realisation that these are stories of those living locally to where the pupil lives. Such connections to history often produce a more in depth understanding of it.
If you would like Jennifer to talk to your pupils about her book and research, she can tailor it to cover particular topics including (but not limited to):

The purpose of studying citizenship is to provide pupils with knowledge, skills and understanding to prepare them to play a full and active part in society. "In particular, citizenship education should foster pupils' keen awareness and understanding of democracy, government and how laws are made and upheld." [National Curriculum programme of study for Citizenship published September 2013]
Suffragettes of Kent provides an insight into the many stories and journeys of hope, determination, courage and sacrifice of those involved in the women's suffrage movement in Kent. People lobbied and protested against the government for a law change for equality. Some, the suffragettes, were non law-abiding: they were militant campaigners that used other means to make their voices heard. Jennifer's school talks also cover the facts around male suffrage as well as votes for women.
Jennifer's book and/or talk is a great way to boost citizenship teaching, Suffragettes of Kent is suitable for a secondary school library.
